Controls and safety-system terminology

Distinguish the magazine release, bolt catch, selector, trigger guard, and fire-control group.

REFERENCE PAGESPrinted pages: 64 to 79; 80 to 81UPLOADED SCANPDF pages: 62 to 79

Controls do different jobs

The magazine release relates to magazine retention. The bolt catch relates to holding the bolt assembly open. The safety selector is part of the safety system. The trigger guard is the surrounding guard, not the trigger mechanism. The book covers these parts separately because the names and functions differ.

Appearance does not establish safety

Descriptions such as extended, ambidextrous, enhanced, or drop-in are product descriptions. They are not assurances that a component is appropriate for a particular firearm or that changing it leaves the safety system functioning correctly.

Internal work has a different boundary

The book's trigger, selector, and retention-pin chapters involve internal components. This public guide retains vocabulary and the need for qualified assessment, while leaving replacement sequences, fitting, adjustment, and performance changes out of the reference.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Know the control's name and role. Suspected safety-system problems require qualified inspection before further use.
