Safety before maintenance
Preparation, protective equipment, and the limits of an owner's maintenance work.
Preparation is part of the work
The opening notice makes familiarity with safe handling a prerequisite. Before routine care, follow the exact firearm's unloading and verification instructions, maintain a safe muzzle direction, and keep fingers outside the trigger guard. A removed magazine alone does not establish that the chamber is empty.

Use a clear, well-lit area and keep ammunition away from maintenance activity. Protect the firearm's finish and organize loose items so that missing or displaced parts are noticed. The book emphasizes a stable work surface and knowledge of the tools being used.
Protection and qualified help
SAAMI recommends eye protection for firearm cleaning and disassembly, and hearing protection when shooting or observing shooting. It also directs owners to manufacturer-authorized repair facilities or qualified gunsmiths. Uncertainty about a safety component, damage, or unfamiliar internal work is a reason to stop and seek qualified help.
A tool collection does not establish qualification. Keep routine care within the manufacturer's owner-maintenance instructions.
